Vol. 14, Truman Week - Special New Student Edition
Features
Family Day Scheduled for Sept. 19, 2009
Truman State University’s annual Family Day is scheduled for Sept. 19, 2009.
Family Day provides families the opportunity to visit the Truman campus and check up on what has been happening with their Truman student during the first few weeks. The tentative schedule below shows that Family Day offers a variety of activities. Families are encouraged to choose what they are interested in and come and go as they please.
A detailed Family Day brochure will be mailed out the end of August. Family Day information will also be available on the Truman website at http://www.truman.edu/pages/172.asp.
Finding a Hotel Room for Family Day
When it comes to large events it is sometimes difficult, if not impossible, to find a hotel room in Kirksville. This is because Kirksville has only about 400 hotel rooms and Truman enrolls about 5,800 students. Parents of new students often end up staying at a hotel outside of Kirksville because the upperclassmen have already booked the rooms. With this in mind, Truman has created a website which provides the names and phone numbers of the hotels in surrounding towns. More information about surrounding accommodations is available at http://www.truman.edu/pages/105.asp?category=16.

Truman Today is sent via e-mail every Monday afternoon during the academic year by the Public Relations Office to all students, faculty, staff and requesting parents.
Truman Today serves as the University’s informational newsletter announcing campus events, scholarship opportunities, financial aid updates, internship opportunities and University deadlines. In addition to the online version, printed copies of the Truman Today are dispersed across campus.
Parents are encouraged to check out Truman Today at http://trumantoday.truman.edu. Parents can receive a link to the online version each week by sending their e-mail address to tmiles@truman.edu.
Students can also access the Truman Today online through their TruView account.Student Accounts Payment Information
Fall 2009 fees will be billed in early August with a due date of August 28. Students paying under the Standard Payment Plan must pay all fees by August 28.
Students signed up for the Truman Flexible Payment Plan pay 25 percent of fees billed by August 28, with flexible payments throughout the semester, and final payment for Fall 2009 due by November 20.
To sign up for Truman’s Flexible Payment Plan, students can go online to their TruView accounts, click the Accepted Student tab, click Flexible Payment Plan, review the requirements and submit their agreement.
The Student Accounts Office has information of interest to students and parents online at http://businessoffice.truman.edu/studentaccts/.TruView - Your Link to What is Happening On Campus and the Kirksville Community
Many Truman students often have the same question once they arrive on campus. “What is there to do in Kirksville, and how do I find out?” That is why the University has added a “Kirksville” link on TruView.
TruView is a student’s one-stop campus portal, providing access to class schedules, grades, open courses, registration information and more. Students can also use TruView to check their e-mail and see University announcements.
Online versions of the Truman Today are also readily available through TruView, and students can quickly access the University Master Calendar to see what events are happening on campus.
With the addition of the Kirksville link, TruView is now every student’s source for things to do in the ‘Ville.
Links to sites such as Kirksville Rocks, the Kirksville Arts Association, Downtown Cinema 8 and the Parks and Recreation Department, among others, will allow students to stay informed and always have something to do in Kirksville.Lyceum Offers Free Cultural Experiences
Since the Kohlenberg Lyceum Series began in 1899 as a lecture course, its aim has been to broaden the cultural experience of students, faculty, staff and the community through speakers, dance, music and drama.
The 5 Browns
Each year the Series brings a wide selection of attractions to the Truman campus. This year is no exception, as the tentative schedule includes the Kansas City Symphony, Jean-Michel Cousteau, The Blanks, Alvin Ailey II and The 5 Browns. A limited number of tickets are available one week prior to each performance.
Tickets for Truman students are free and available one week prior to each performance in the Student Activities Board Office located in the Student Union Building.
Additional tickets may be purchased at Edna Campbell’s or the Truman cashier window.
For more information, call 660.785.4016 or go online to http://lyceum.truman.edu/.Tru-Positions Job Database Now Available Online
The Financial Aid Office recently launched Truman’s new centralized student employment website called Tru-Positions.
Tru-Positions provides a comprehensive database of existing scholarship service, institutional and work study positions, including job descriptions and transferable work skills. This is an important advancement over the current process of requiring students to independently locate a student employment or service position with minimal direction or support.
Students are encouraged to check back periodically to view new postings. Tru-Positions will be updated as positions become available.
Tru-Positions can be found online at https://trupositions.truman.edu. Instructions for viewing and applying for a position can be found under the student information section.
Any questions or feedback can be directed to Tom Stuart at tstuart@truman.edu.Bike Co-Op Provides Free Resources
Truman encourages students, faculty and staff to ride their bikes to and from campus. First-year students who live on campus may enjoy having a bike to make trips around the community, and the Kirksville Bike Co-Op can assist their bicycle needs.
The Kirksville Bike Co-Op is a service and educational organization committed to community involvement through cultivating the development, use and promotion of sustainable transportation.
Originally started as the Community Sharing Bike Program in 2005, it evolved into the Bike Co-Op a year later when it was determined the bicycles needed continual repair and maintenance. The Bike Co-Op was founded with the primary mission to establish a space on campus for bike repair and for students to teach other students and community members how to repair their own bikes.
Truman students can attain free membership in the Bike Co-Op, allowing them access to the workshop. The Bike Co-Op workshop, located between Grim Hall and the Adair House on Patterson Street, is a place on the Truman campus where people of the community are invited to come and learn how to fix their bikes under the guidance of a trained mechanic. More information about the Kirksville Bike Co-Op can be found online at http://bikeco-op.truman.edu.
To facilitate bicycle usage, Truman has racks available around the perimeter of campus. For the safety of pedestrians, people are not permitted to ride their bike in the interior of campus on the walkways. Maps with designated bike paths can be picked up at the Department of Public Safety (DPS). For safe riding, if students do bring a bike to campus, they should remember to also bring along a bike helmet and a proper bike light for night riding. Students are also encouraged to voluntarily register their bike with DPS. For more information call 660.785.4176.Recycling at Truman
Truman recycles many items including mixed office paper, plastic bottles and jugs, magazines, newspapers, cardboard, aluminum cans, hardback books, shredded paper, glass and printer cartridges.
For campus residents, there are recycling drop-off bins located throughout all buildings. They are located in major traffic zones and are available at all hours buildings are open.
Students can volunteer at the Recycling Center. Contact Howard Worcester at 660.785.7672 for additional information about the Recycling Center at Truman.
Student Senate will be providing recycling bins to all first-year students living in the residence halls to promote recycling as an integrated daily activity. The students will be able to keep them when they move out of the residence halls.Kirk-Tran Provides Citywide Transport
Students who do not have a car can use Kirk-Tran for transportation.
Kirk-Tran is the only fully accessible public transit service in Kirksville. Kirk-Tran is administered by the City of Kirksville in cooperation with a volunteer advisory committee made up of local citizens.
Kirk-Tran provides a Demand-Response system in addition to a Fixed Route system. The Demand-Response system hours of operation are Monday through Friday 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Cost is $3 each time a passenger boards the vehicle.
The Fixed Route system, which includes a stop on campus at the corner of Franklin and Randolph, has hours of operation between 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Cost is $2 each time a passenger boards the vehicle at one of the 19 local bus stops. To view the Fixed Route system schedule visit http://www.kirksvillecity.com and tab over the Residents or Visitors button.
Reserve rides by calling 665.8404 or 1.877.666.KIRK.Numerous Volunteer Opportunities Available to Students Through the University’s SERVE Center
Students who are interested in volunteering on campus or in the Kirksville community should go to the SERVE Center to become acquainted with the opportunities available.
The SERVE Center, located on the lower level of the Student Union, assists and promotes student involvement in community service. It provides information about community agencies looking for volunteers and assists volunteers in contacting agencies involved in a particular project. Students may register to obtain volunteer opportunity information through the SERVE website at http://serve.truman.edu/ by e-mail at serve@truman.edu, by phone at 785.7222, or by visiting the Center and completing a brief registration form.
SERVE Center Adviser Amy Currier estimates at least half of Truman students participate in some form of service for various reasons. They may serve for the opportunity to get involved, for the chance to help and interact with community members, or simply to continue the volunteering they began during high school.
The SERVE Center on Truman’s campus is a big help to these students and to community members seeking volunteers. The Center matches students’ individual tastes with agencies in the community and on campus. Their motto “Helping You Help Others” reflects this purpose.
In addition to the many ongoing service projects in which students and groups participate, numerous unique opportunities and events are planned each year.
During the fall semester, the SERVE Center’s largest event is the Big Week of Giving. The focus of this event is to bring awareness to the number of hungry people that reside in Adair County and to collect food and monetary donations to assist these individuals. The SERVE Center also raises money for the Northeast Missouri Special Olympics during the annual Bowl for Gold event, and assists with the coordination of the Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser in early February.
More than 50 volunteers lead games and entertain children at the Thompson Center Halloween Carnival, and the Kirksville public school carnivals during the spring and fall semesters. Student groups also organize the Ryle Holiday Market each winter to raise money for Victim Support Services.
Each spring, the SERVE Center coordinates a citywide service project called the Big Event in which?Truman students say a big “thank you” to the people of Kirksville for their support of the University. This gathering of more than 1,000 volunteers is the largest event sponsored by Truman’s SERVE Center annually.
Other spring events include organizing and visiting schools for a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. Students also join the SERVE Center in raising awareness for heart disease by participating in Wear Red Day and raising money through the Rhapsody in Red Heart Gala, Kirksville’s primary fundraising event for the American Heart Association. This year’s Gala will take place Nov. 7. Many organizations also sponsor blood drives and other fundraisers for various philanthropies throughout the year. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact the SERVE Center at 785.7222.Plan Ahead for Internship Opportunities
Tremendous opportunities are available to students through internships. Truman sponsors the Missouri Government Internship Program and the Harry S. Truman Presidential Museum and Library Internships. Truman is also an affiliate of The Washington Center Internship Program.
The Missouri Government Internship Program offers a unique opportunity for juniors or seniors to intern at the Capitol in Jefferson City, Mo., with a public official, legislator or state agency during the spring semester. The internship, which is open to all majors, provides an inside look at state government. The interns live in Jefferson City during the spring semester and receive a stipend of $2,500. They may also earn up to 15 hours of credit.
Truman students interested in spending a summer in Washington, D.C., are given that opportunity through the Truman in Washington Internship Program affiliated with The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars.
To be eligible for the Truman in Washington Internship Program, students must have at least a 3.25 grade point average. Selection for the program is competitive, with the University sponsoring only five students to participate during each summer semester. The annual program awards participants credit hours for their internship work and an independent study project.
The Harry S. Truman Presidential Museum and Library Internship provides an opportunity for a student to spend a summer at the Truman Library, located in Independence, Mo. The internship is open to all Truman juniors and seniors who meet University requirements for an internship. Students can earn up to 10 hours of credit for this full-time internship. This is an eight-week unpaid internship. After being selected by a University committee and the Truman Library staff, the intern may work in a variety of areas of the Library including archives, public relations, marketing, educational programming, museum development or visitor services. Assignments are based on the interns’ abilities and interests along with the Library’s needs. The internship offers a five-hour (in-state) tuition scholarship.
When thinking about an internship, it is important to plan ahead for living arrangements. Truman allows students who are accepted into a University-sponsored internship to be relieved of their residence hall contract without being charged a termination fee.St. Louis Alumni Chapter Scholarship Golf Tournament Aug. 29
The St. Louis Chapter of the Truman National Alumni Association is sponsoring a golf tournament to benefit the Chapter’s Scholarship Fund. Alumni and friends of the University are invited to participate Aug. 29 at the St. Peters Golf Course.
Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., with a putting contest at 11 a.m. A light lunch will be available before the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Snack and beverage carts will be running during the tournament and a pork steak dinner will be served after the event.
