It's Time to "Exchange" Your Email

While most Truman employees are aware that ITS has been working on migrating people to “Exchange”, a lot of you are probably unsure what “Exchange” is. “Migrate to exchange” simply means that email is routed through the “exchange server” rather than through the old email server, Gold. Exchange Server, the Microsoft messaging and collaboration server, is software that runs on a server (Zinc) that enables you to send and receive electronic mail and other forms of interactive communication through computer networks. The Exchange Server features help you to share information quickly and efficiently. Typical collaborative scenarios include maintaining shared address lists that everyone can view and edit, scheduling meetings that include people and conference rooms by viewing associated free or busy schedules, the ability to grant other people, such as administrators, access to your mailbox on your behalf. You can also manage "rules" for processing messages on Exchange Server, giving you the flexibility to create auto-responses and automatic filing of incoming messages.

While Exchange Server provides support for older email clients such as Eudora, to take full advantage of Exchange Server features requires upgrading to Outlook 2003.

Another major advantage of the new Exchange Server is the “Outlook Web Access” feature. The Outlook Web Access feature enables users to access their “mailbox” from anywhere an Internet connection is available. With this comes the ability to check email remotely, as well as checking your calendar and contacts. Outlook Web Access is designed to closely mimic Outlook 2003 which helps users transition easily from one to the other.
