  • Truman Receives Award for Record Preservation Program

Truman was the recipient of the 2013 Jonas Viles Award for its partnership with the Missouri State Archives to create the Northeast Missouri Records Preservation Program.

This honor, awarded by the Friends of Missouri State Archives, is annually bestowed upon a person or organization that has made a significant contribution to the preservation of Missouri’s heritage. Named after the University of Missouri professor who rescued thousands of documents from the capitol lawn after the 1911 fire, this award is given to those who possess a deep commitment to the preservation and study of Missouri’s history and have made a positive impact on the safekeeping, accessibility, scholarship and/or promotion of the state’s past.

In Truman’s unique program, students, under the supervision of Archives’ staff, arrange, describe and index historical court records from Missouri’s northeastern counties, in a secure on-campus facility. Although the program has only been active for three full semesters and a summer term, interns have already logged nearly 1,400 hours, processing 60 cubic feet of records. With this high level of production, the students have completed their initial project, involving records from the Shelby County Circuit Court, and are now working on a collection from the Clark County Circuit Court. Further, this effort now serves as a model for establishing similar opportunities with other educational institutions across the state.

Stephen Wynn, head of technical services and systems in Pickler Memorial Library, accepted the award, presented by Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, during the Friends of Missouri State Archives annual meeting June 8 in Jefferson City.

Accomplishments of previous Jonas Viles Award winners include discovering historical records, processing extensive collections of records with limited financial resources, securing workspace for local records projects, placing scans of original documents online, providing significant financial support for historical projects, securing federal grant funding for historical projects, sponsoring a statewide conference with a variety of complementary activities and creating publications, radio series and other works.
  • Football Summer Golf Outings Scheduled

The Bulldog football program will host a pair of golf outings this summer in St. Louis and Chicago.

The St. Louis outing will take place June 24 at The Landings at Spirit Golf Course in Chesterfield, Mo. The Chicago outing is July 22 at the Orchard Valley Golf Club in Aurora, Ill.

The St. Louis outing will return to the same course as last year only with an earlier start time. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. There is a Sunday social at Llywelyn’s Pub (2490 Taylor Road) located within the Wildwood Town Center and a special rate under “Truman State University Football” for out of town players at the Wildwood Hotel (636.733.9100; 2801 Fountain Place).

The second year of the Chicago outing is back at the Orchard Valley Golf Club in Aurora. Registration will begin around noon with the shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Both tournaments cost $500 per foursome. Individuals are welcomed to sign up and be grouped together. The St. Louis outing individual rate is $125 while the Chicago rate is $150. All rates include range balls, carts, meals and much more.

Registration information is available at gobulldogs.truman.edu/store.
  • Families Invited to Join Weekend Picnic with Taiwan at Truman

Truman will be hosting a group of 34 young high school women and their teachers from Zen Del High School of Chunghua, Taiwan this June and July for an intensive English language and cultural immersion program.

“Taiwan at Truman” is looking for families interested in spending a few hours interacting with these students for food and games from 4:30-8 p.m. June 23. Festivities will take place at the Point Shelter at Thousand Hills State Park, with dinner available beginning at 5 p.m.

In previous years, the Taiwan at Truman program has featured organized weekend homestays with Truman families. Due to scheduling challenges, this weekend picnic is being used in lieu of homestays to provide students with an opportunity to interact with American families.

Individuals and whole families are welcome. While interaction with youth is desirable, interested faculty, staff and friends of Truman without children are also welcome to come and interact with the guests. The only pre-requisites are a desire to converse with students from a different culture, and a willingness to interact in typical picnic games during the evening.

To help with headcount, interested individuals or families should contact the Truman Institute by emailing Kevin Minch at kminch@truman.edu or calling 660.785.5384. RSVP by June 20.
