  • Truman Athletes Earn Academic Honors

    Several Truman student-athletes received honors from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

    Forty-two Bulldogs received the GLVC’s James Gaffney FSC Distinguished Scholar Award for earning a 4.0 grade point average during the course of the academic year. The complete list of can be found here.

    Additionally, 37 student-athletes were honored with the Council of Presidents’ Academic Excellence Award given to student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility in the intercollegiate sport in which they participated and maintained at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA throughout their academic career. Truman students accounted for five of the 25 student-athletes honored across the conference who concluded their careers with an unblemished 4.0 cumulative GPA. They are: Cade McKnight, men’s basketball; Emily Ducaji, women’s golf; Morgan Smith, volleyball; Rachel Kernich, softball; and Kayla Quanstrum, softball.   • Student Health Center and UCS Available During the Summer

    The Student Health Center and University Counseling Services will continue to remain open throughout the summer.

    The Student Health Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday to continue to provide in-person services to students living on or off campus throughout the summer. Complete Family Medicine also runs the Urgent Care in Kirksville, and the Student Health Center offers all of the same services, with the exception of radiology.     University Counseling Services is open all summer from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday. UCS will continue to offer both in-person and remote counseling services, and now has counselors licensed in Missouri, Kansas and Iowa who can also provide remote counseling.   • Ensign and Wen Earn Academic Innovation Awards

    Julene Ensign, assistant professor of exercise science, MAE physical education, and Zhijun Wen, assistant professor of Chinese, were the Spring 2022 winners of the Truman Academic Innovation Award.

    Ensign was recognized for aligning sections of ES 530G/531G with HLTH 198L. This collaboration among peers evolved into symbiotic relationships that allowed physical education candidates in ES 530G/531G to build pedagogical skills and affords students enrolled in HLTH 198L opportunities to provide valuable feedback on their experiences as learners. Both sets of students are challenged to learn from each other through active engagement during the instructional process.

    Wen was recognized for incorporating the latest research findings from second language studies and learning sciences. This method promotes the creative use of the target language as the goal of learning. Learning a second language in this way leads to integrated and dynamic knowledge of the language, which is easy to apply to new contexts. Applying this method in his Chinese language teaching, he is able to offer students a whole new experience and help them build strong skills in Chinese.

  • Student Loans Available Through University Foundation

    Students with financial needs that may interfere with their ability to continue their education can seek assistance through the Truman State University Foundation Loan Program.

    Foundation loans can come in the form of short-term loans, long-term loans, access loans and cultural loans. Applications go through the Financial Aid Office and are repaid directly to the University. Banks and outside lenders are not involved in the process.

    To be eligible for a Foundation loan students must be enrolled on a full-time basis and be in good academic standing. Students also need to demonstrate an ability to repay the loan in a timely manner. Deferments of up to five years are available for cultural and long-term loans, provided the student is enrolled on a full-time basis.

    In addition to scholarship assistance, the loan program is an example of the immediate impact of donations to the Truman State University Foundation. Gifts from alumni and friends allow Truman to provide assistance directly to students as they pursue their education.

  • Lovegreen Appointed to Board of Governors

    Bill Lovegreen was appointed to the Truman State University Board of Governors in June.

    Lovegreen has been a community leader and business owner in Kirksville since 1988. As the owner and operator of Lovegreen Ford Chrysler, he manages a staff of 25 employees. He served as the 64th president of the Missouri Automobile Dealers Association from 2003-04 and has been a trustee of the organization’s Workers Compensation Trust since 2005.

    Among his other civic commitments, Lovegreen has served as the district chairman of the Black Diamond District Boy Scouts of America since 2013 and has been a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board since 1993. He served on the Kirksville Housing Authority for 21 years and is an active member of the Kirksville Shrine Club, the Palmyra Masonic Lodge #19, the Kirksville Noon Rotary Club and the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce.

    A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Lovegreen has a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering.

    During orientation days Einstein’s will be open from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and Starbucks will be open from 1-5 p.m. Remaining orientation days are June 27 and 30.

  • At-Home COVID Tests Available

    The Student Health Center has at-home COVID tests available. The Student Health Center is open throughout the summer, providing in-person services to students.   • CAE Summer Schedule

    Throughout the summer months the Center for Academic Excellence will continue to monitor the advise@truman.edu email and respond to inquiries as they come in. However, the Zoom open advising site will not be monitored regularly due to changes in summer staffing and work-flow. Open Zoom-in/walk-in advising will resume after fall classes start.
