The American Shakespeare Center (ASC) will perform “As You Like It” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in Baldwin Auditorium.

“As You Like It,” one of William Shakespeare’s comedies, tells the story of Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court, accompanied by her cousin Celia and the court jester, Touchstone.

Actors will perform musical numbers 30 minutes prior to the actual show. Tickets are free but should be obtained in advance at: the Public Relations Office, McClain Hall 101; the School of Arts and Letters Office, Ophelia Parrish 1101; the Information Desk in the Student Union Building; or downtown at Edna Campbells. Tickets will be available starting Jan. 18.

The ASC seeks to make Shakespeare and the joys of theatre accessible to all. At the company’s home in Staunton, Va., the ASC has constructed a re-creation of Shakespeare’s original indoor theatre, the Blackfriars Playhouse, and plans to build an open-air replica of London’s second Globe Theatre.

February’s performance will not be the first in Kirksville for the ASC, which tours regularly and has earned a reputation as one of America’s most respected theatre companies. Between 1996 and 2001, the company performed annually at Truman. The last ASC performance in Kirksville took place in March 2009 and featured a production of “Hamlet.”

“As You Like It” is sponsored by the Department of English and Linguistics, with additional funding from the Arnold and Alanna Preussner Fund, Truman State University Foundation, New Student Programs, the Theatre Department and the School of Arts and Letters.

The Truman Institute, under the leadership of Kevin Minch, will now be coordinating the planning and marketing efforts of all summer camps and conferences.

This change came about due to the recommendations of the Summer Camp and Conference Committee appointed this past July by President Paino. The Committee was asked to develop solutions to grow and improve the University’s management of camps, institutes, conferences and events.

The Truman Institute will assume a number of the responsibilities currently shouldered by individual programs and previously handled by the Office of Conferences and Events in Student Affairs. The Institute will be responsible for coordinating schedules, communication, marketing and facilities use for special events, as well as nurturing new programs in their development and implementation.

Among the early goals of the plan will be to coordinate marketing efforts and develop a common portal for individuals and groups seeking to attend programs at Truman or to host a conference or event in campus facilities.

President Paino will also appoint a committee that will be tasked with reviewing existing policies regarding the use and rental of University facilities. The committee will be charged with exploring policies regarding rental rates for classrooms, the Student Union Building and other common spaces, as well as determining workable rules governing the appropriate fees for different types of user constituencies. The committee will include representation from a range of constituent groups, including Truman students.

Truman’s Model United Nations Team won the award for best delegation at the 21st annual American Model United Nations (AMUN) conference late last semester. George Allan Jr. and Victoria Benson, both sophomores studying political science, traveled to Chicago to represent Truman in the competition.

In the competition, AMUN assigns a country for each team to represent in a simulation of the United Nations. This year, Truman’s team represented the General Assembly Plenary for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Truman competed against more than 1,500 students from domestic and foreign universities such as Yale University, the University of Arizona, Georgetown University and National Chengchi University in Taiwan.

This is the second year in a row Truman won the best delegation award. The Model United Nations Team has already been slotted to represent Morocco and Iran in next year’s competition.

Dr. Marc Imhoff of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will visit Kirksville Jan. 20 for two free public lectures.

The first lecture, entitled “Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production—Can the Earth Keep Up?” will be presented at 12 p.m. in Mehegan Classroom, located on the ground floor of the Gutensohn Clinic at A.T. Still University. The second lecture, entitled “Planetary Secrets: The Secret Lives of Storms, Deserts and Fires,” will be presented at 8 p.m. in the Student Union Building Alumni Room.

Imhoff works in the Earth Sciences Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center as the project scientist for Terra, NASA’s Flagship Earth Observing System Mission. As Terra project scientist, Imhoff coordinates an international research team using Terra and other instruments to study Earth’s changing atmosphere, oceans and land surface. He has personally conducted research on a wide range of topics including the impact of urbanization on biodiversity and food security, urban heat islands and climate and carbon accounting using remote sensing for the Kyoto Protocol. He was a primary developer of the satellite imagery showing Earth’s cities at night and pioneered the use of radar sensors for terrain and vegetation mapping.

Imhoff holds a bachelor’s degree in physical geography and a master’s degree in agronomy from The Pennsylvania State University, as well as a Ph.D. in biological sciences from Stanford University. Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, is a membership honor society of roughly 91,000 scientists and engineers. The goals of the society are to honor scientific accomplishments, to encourage and enhance worldwide appreciation and support for scientific research and to foster a creative and dynamic interaction among sciences, technology and society. Members participate at the local level through more than 500 chapters and clubs. The Kirksville chapter, chartered as a club in 1989 and as a chapter in 1995, is composed of approximately 60 members representing scientists in the Northeast Missouri region, including the faculty and students of both Truman State University and the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Each spring the Kirksville chapter hosts a Sigma Xi National Lecturer, such as Imhoff, to give a public lecture.

The Truman Public Relations Office has named Baillie James, a junior communication major and Spanish minor, as intern for the Spring 2011 semester.


James is from Warrensburg, Mo. and graduated from Warrensburg High School in 2008. She is the daughter of Bridget and James James.

As an intern for the Public Relations Office, James will help write, produce and distribute the Truman Today on campus and online. She will also write press releases and fulfill various office tasks.

This semester, James is vice president of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and a member/choreographer for the Franklin Street Singers.

While at Truman, James has also written for the Index, tutored Spanish and worked on the public relations team at the Career Center.

James hopes to pursue a career in public relations and looks forward to the hands-on experience she will gain through this internship.

Any student currently attending a Missouri college or university could win up to $200—just for submitting a photo.

Study Missouri, a collaborative project among Missouri colleges and universities, is hosting a photo contest for snapshots taken during students’ study abroad experiences. The contest includes cash prizes for each category, international and study away, and all high-quality entries will be displayed for International Education Day Feb. 16 in the Missouri State Capitol rotunda.

Photographs must feature a country where the photographer attended college and photos must be “true to life” without alternations such as photoshopped objects or people.

The grand prize winner will receive $200, first place winners will receive $150, second place will receive $100 and third place winners will receive $75. All prize money will be applied to educational expenses for the recipients.

Deadline for entry is 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time Feb. 2. To submit an entry, attach photos to an e-mail entitled “Photo Contest” and send to StudyMissouriPhotoContest@gmail.com. In the text of the e-mail, students should include their name, whether they are an international student or a study away student, the name of the Missouri institution attended, the name of the country where the picture was taken and the date of the photo. Students should also include a caption of no more than 100 words describing where the photo was taken and why the photo is significant to them. For any questions, call 573.522.1463.

In an effort to deepen the University’s relationship with Target, Truman’s marketing faculty and Kristin Raby, Target’s campus liaison, collaborated with Target executives last semester to give students hands-on experience through a class competition.

Student groups from the Fall 2010 Brand Management and Strategic Marketing class evaluated Target’s Home Goods Department and possible ways to improve merchandising and brand recognition. Groups presented their recommendations to visiting Target executives at the end of the semester and Target awarded $2,000 to the winning group.


This semester, the competition will be repeated with two classes to increase the number of contenders.

Debra Cartwright, professor of business administration, said this competition helped make course material relevant because students were dealing with a real-life dilemma for an existing company. This competition was a semester-long project for the class.

Truman Foundation Study Abroad Scholarships are being offered for Summer 2011. Ten $1,500 scholarships will be awarded for summer faculty-led Truman study abroad programs based on financial need, statement of purpose and academic achievement. Applications are now available in the Center for International Education Office (Kirk Building 114). These applications are due in the CIE Office by noon on Jan. 28 and recipients will be notified by the end of February.

Women’s Club Volleyball will host tryouts for the spring semester at 4-5:30 p.m. Jan. 18-19 in the Student Recreation Center.

The Truman Bookstore will sponsor a book reading and signing for “Progressive Left Centre Animal Lover Legacy” by local historian Lawrence Iles at 2 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Student Union Building Down Under. Book photographer George Barlow and illustrator Betty McLane-Iles will also be present.

The Northeast Missouri Farm to School Workshop will take place 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Student Union Building Activities Room.
 
Speaker Patti Miller will share her experiences about the fight for equality from  4-5:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in Baldwin Hall Auditorium. Miller worked for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement.

The Department of Public Safety will conduct van driving classes at 2 p.m. Jan. 25 and Jan. 26 in Grim-Smith Building 109. This class is required to drive Truman’s full-size vans. The class will last 2-3 hours. Space is limited, so call 785.4177 or e-mail joycook@truman.edu to reserve a spot. Student drivers must also complete a Waiver of Vehicle Usage Policy form, available at http://police.truman.edu.

An informational meeting for a new summer course that includes trips to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 in Pershing Building 232.

John Rush, the Human iPod, will perform at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Student Union Building Georgian Rooms. Rush plays more than seven instruments during the show and performs songs by request out of playbooks.

ROTC will host the Frostbite Frolic 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Jan. 29. The race starts and ends at Stokes Stadium. Registration forms are available at Baldwin Hall 132, and registration continues until the day of the event. The race costs $15, and all participants receive a goodie bag and a t-shirt.

Special Olympics Northeast Area will host a recruitment meeting for organizations from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in Violette Hall 1308. Interested organizations should send one representative who knows approximately how many volunteers will be available for the event on April 16.
