BBQ Celebrates Graduates
The annual Graduating Student BBQ will take place from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. May 8 on the Mall.
All May and August 2019 undergraduate and master’s graduates are invited to attend. The complimentary meal includes burgers, hot dogs, drinks and dessert. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available on request. This will be an opportunity for graduates to pick up their first official alumni T-shirt. Shirts are also available for pick up in the Office of Advancement, McClain Hall 205.

Students Receive Academic Honor Awards
The annual Academic Honor Awards recognizes outstanding students who have dedicated time, energy and talent to their academic achievements.This year’s ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. May 10 in the Student Union Building Georgian Rooms. Alumna Bonnie Kuebler (’87) will give the keynote address. As a student, Kuebler was president of Student Senate and Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, a member of the Student Activities Board and Historical Society, a Latin tutor for the Joseph Baldwin Academy and the student representative on the Faculty Senate. As a senior, she received departmental honors as the outstanding student in history.
Kuebler earned her law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. In her career with State Farm Insurance Companies she has had several positions in Missouri and Illinois including her current role as executive succession analyst at the corporate headquarters in Bloomington, Ill.
As an alumna, Kuebler has continued to stay involved with Truman, serving as president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, a member of the Foundation Board and a member of the St. Louis Alumni Chapter. She and her husband, Kevin, sponsor three scholarships for Truman students, and both of their children attended the University.Below is a list of students who were awarded academic honors.

Jordan SmithTEDx Speaker Application Extended
The application deadline for the 2019 TEDx speaker series, hosted by Student Government, has been extended to June 15.
Speaker applicants who are accepted will be filmed and featured on the TEDx website reaching thousands of people and giving speakers an international platform. Any further questions can be directed to Shania Montúfar, committee chair. Specific details can be found on the speaker application, available at senate.truman.edu/applications. All students, faculty and members of the surrounding community are encouraged to apply.
TED is a non-profit organization that sponsors independent conferences all over the world. These conferences strive to spread new ideas through short, powerful talks that can cover a wide range of topics. Throughout the conference, audience members should be able to recognize the breadth of new ideas in the community and draw connections between ideas they once thought disparate.
Announcements
Alumna Selected as Commencement Speaker
Stephanie Parkhurst will serve as the commencement speaker at the graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. May 11 at Stokes Stadium.
Parkhurst is a software developer at AGCO Corporation, a global agricultural company that produces a variety of farm machinery and equipment. She develops software on the current Electronic Diagnostic Tool. Before working for AGCO, she interned with several organizations including Dairy Farmers of America and Principal Financial Group. She was responsible for implementing continuous integration and developing on the SAP system, while performing business analyst roles as well.
Parkhurst received her Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and a minor in mathematics from Truman in 2017. While pursuing her education, she served for a year as the Portfolio Office manager at the University.
Apart from technology, Parkhurst also likes to participate in community development. She was a co-FUEL leader at the Baptist Student Union and devoted her time in El Salvador as a vacation Bible school helper. Parkhurst currently lives near Wichita, Kan., and enjoys fellowship with friends and family, exercising, partner dancing and being outdoors.

Greenhouse Hosts Plant Sale
The Truman greenhouse will host a plant sale from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 8 in Magruder Hall 2034. Most plants for sale are under $5. For more information contact Christina Cross.Schutter Retirement Reception
Food Packs Available to Students
Daily food packs are now available for students. Supplied by the Pantry for Adair County, the food packs are free to all students. They can be picked up with a Truman ID at the SERVE Center located in the Student Union Building 1105. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The mission of the Pantry of Adair County is to provide supplemental food for residents of the county with food insecurities.

Scholarship Hours Available for Compost Project
The Compost Project assigns students in teams of two to collect food scraps from dining halls and transport them to the University Farm using the Compost Project pick-up truck, mix the scraps with sawdust for composting, thoroughly clean bins, and return the clean bins to the dining halls. This project helps divert more than 100,000 pounds of food waste from landfills each year. Students can apply for the position through trupositions.truman.edu.Morin Retirement Reception

Barry Poyner, professor of communication, served as Parliamentarian at the Indiana State Teachers Association Annual Conference at Nolansville, Ind., April 27.
Softball player, Christa Reisinger, has been named to the Schutt Sports/NFCA DII Player of the Year Top 25 for the third-straight season. Reisinger was also awarded second team All-American and Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division II Championship. Emma Walbert was named Freshman of the Year and third team. Alyssa Hajduk joined her teammate in being awarded third team and Adrienne Compton was named second team. Mackayla Gordon was named as Truman’s James R. Spalding Sportmanship nominee while the entire squad won the Sportmanship Team Award.
Jesse Krebs, professor of music, served as a guest artist at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky., April 28. He worked with four WKU clarinet students in a master class on solos by Sutermeister, Crusell and Weber and coached a student in quartet. Krebs also performed a guest clarinet recital which included Vinivio Meza’s “Dos Melodias,” Poulenc’s “Sonata for Two Clarinets,” Andrew Hannon’s “Two Lost Loves,” Mauricio Murcia Bedoya’s “Columbian Dances” and the world premiere of Man-Ching Donald Yu’s “Transformations” which was composed for him.
Scholarship Opportunities
Purdy Emerging Leaders Scholarship
The Missouri Scholarship and Loan Foundation will offer the Purdy Emerging Leaders Scholarship, named in honor of Allan Walker Purdy.
Purdy was born in 1914 on a farm near Macon and was the first in his family to attend a four-year college. He worked in the University of Missouri’s College of Agriculture before becoming the campus’s first director of scholarships and student financial aid.
The scholarship is designed to provide merit-based scholarships to emerging leaders who are outstanding students and who have a need for additional resources for higher education. The scholarship amount can vary based on an applicant’s circumstances. The general range will be $1,000-$5,000 based on expected family contribution (EFC), unmet need and other factors.
Applicants must be a Missouri resident, typically a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA, a U.S. Citizen, attending a Missouri public four-year university or the State Technical College of Missouri, and be a sophomore, junior or senior in college. Deadline to apply is June 15, 2019. Applications should be submitted online through Scholarship Central at moslf.org.
