Middle school students interested in science and careers in the health care field can get hands-on experience during M*A*S*H* Camp July 7-9.

Each summer the Northeast Missouri Area Health Education Center (NEMO AHEC) presents a M*A*S*H* (Missouri AHEC Science & Health) Camp for middle school students in Adair County. The M*A*S*H* Camp provides hands-on experiences to students interested in health care and science occupations, and exposes them to a variety of careers in the science and health field.

M*A*S*H* Camp will take place July 7 on Truman’s campus, with events on July 8 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center and July 9 at the University farm.

Area health care providers and educators will combine their talents to present an impressive instructional program that will introduce students to the fascinating world of science. Students will participate in chemistry and biology labs, scrub labs, suture labs, hospital exploration, recreational activities and more.

Any student who will enter sixth, seventh or eighth grade in the fall is eligible to attend. Enrollment is limited to the first 30 applicants.

Cost of attending M*A*S*H* Camp is $30 for 2-day camps and $40 for 3-day camps. Fee includes meals, snacks, t-shirt, dog tag and supplies. Students unable to pay the fee can provide a letter of explanation to receive a camp scholarship.

Eight faculty members were recently awarded the Faculty Summer Research Fellowship for Summer 2009.

The purpose of the Summer Research Fellowship is to encourage and support research, scholarship, performance and other creative endeavors of the faculty that will ultimately result in the public dissemination of the peer reviewed work.

The faculty members selected for this honor are: Abdorrahman Alghamdi, assistant professor of equine science; Tim AuBuchon, assistant professor of music; Marc Becker, associate professor of history; Sana Camara, associate professor of French; Aaron Fine, associate professor of art; Sylvia Macauley, associate professor of history; Obinna Nwakanma, assistant professor of English; and Peter Rolnick, professor of physics.

A total of eight $4,000 fellowships were awarded.

Debra Kerby, professor of accounting, received the 2009 Outstanding Educator Award from the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA) during that organization’s annual convention in June.


Kerby’s award was one of the MSCPA Impact Awards to recognize CPAs who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in their profession.

The Outstanding Educator Award recognizes Kerby’s distinguished contributions to classroom teaching, motivating students, educational innovation and active involvement in the CPA profession.

Currently Kerby serves on the MSCPA’s Centennial Celebration and LEAP (Lead and Enhance the Accounting Profession) committees.

The Gates Millennium organization is accepting summer applications until June 19. GMS summer term funding is only available for scholars who will complete their degree program with a degree conferred at the end of the summer term or for graduate scholars who are taking courses during the summer required by their degree program. The speech and debate team will now be under the leadership of communication faculty members Kristi Scholten and Russell Luce.

Scholten will be the new director of forensics, filling the role vacated by Kevin Minch who will be serving as the first director of the Truman Institute.

Among other things, the Truman Institute will develop initiatives and partnerships to generate revenue and support for the University’s mission.

Luce will continue his role as assistant director of forensics.

The Emerging Scholar Awards recognize outstanding rising sophomores studying at Phi Kappa Phi member institutions. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi will grant 60 awards in the amount of $250 to students who meet the following eligibility requirements:

 *   Attend an institution with a Phi Kappa Phi chapter

 *   Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale

 *   Have a minimum of 30 semester hours

 *   Have earned no more than a total of 60 semester hours
