More Than Half Of All Truman Student-Athletes Named Academic All-GLVC
A total of 228 Truman student-athletes were among the record 2,584 honorees named Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference by the league.
The Academic All-GLVC honor is bestowed upon student-athletes who meet a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 during at least two semesters at the institution and compete in one of the league-sponsored sports.
Truman was well above the GLVC average per-school mark of 160 honorees.
In addition to the 228 Bulldogs named All-Academic, a total of 20 student-athletes maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA. Those 20 were part of the 52 percent increase of 179 4.0 GPA student-athletes across all 16 GLVC member schools.
Nine of Truman’s sports had more than 60 percent of their rosters named Academic All-GLVC led by softball (80 percent). Women’s track (70 percent), men’s cross country (70 percent) women’s tennis (66 percent), women’s swimming (66 percent), women’s soccer (65 percent), baseball (64 percent) and men’s soccer (64 percent) were among the leaders among their peer teams across the league.
In total, more than half of all Truman student-athletes (53.2 percent) were named Academic All-GLVC, which is up from the 208 student-athletes from a year ago.Truman Named a Best Buy in "Fiske Guide to Colleges"
Truman is one of 21 public colleges profiled as a “best buy” school in the 2017 edition of “Fiske Guide to Colleges.”
For more than 30 years, “Fiske Guide to Colleges” has chosen a select group of schools, noted for quality academic offerings and affordable cost, for its annual best buy list. All of the best buy schools fall into the inexpensive or moderate price category, and most have four- or five-star academics ratings.
This year’s edition of the “Fiske Guide to Colleges” examined colleges and universities in the United States, Canada and the U.K. Truman was the only Missouri school to be included among the Fiske best buy schools.Wrestling to Compete in GLVC
The coming academic year will mark the first time in school history that all 20 Truman men’s and women’s athletics programs will compete under the same conference banner.
The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) will increase its sports sponsorship from 20 to 21 with the inclusion of men’s wrestling beginning in 2016-17. The GLVC Council of Presidents formally approved the addition of the league’s 21st sport in May.
The Bulldogs will join six other member institutions for the inaugural GLVC championship next February. Truman is joined by Bellarmine University, Drury University, University of Indianapolis, Maryville University, McKendree University and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
From its inception as a sport on campus in 1965 through 1986, Truman wrestling was a member of the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Bulldogs won five MIAA titles (1968, ’69, ’70, ’78, ’79) and had 33 individual conference champions. Wrestling returned as a conference sport in 2012 to the MIAA and remained as an associate member for one year while the school transitioned the majority of the athletics programs to the GLVC in 2013.
The 2016-17 schedule will be announced at a later date, however GLVC competition is expected to take place over a three-week period in January and February. The GLVC champion shall be decided upon by winning percentage of league matches only. There will not be a postseason tournament.
