Wrestling to Compete in GLVC

The coming academic year will mark the first time in school history that all 20 Truman men’s and women’s athletics programs will compete under the same conference banner.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) will increase its sports sponsorship from 20 to 21 with the inclusion of men’s wrestling beginning in 2016-17. The GLVC Council of Presidents formally approved the addition of the league’s 21st sport in May.

The Bulldogs will join six other member institutions for the inaugural GLVC championship next February. Truman is joined by Bellarmine University, Drury University, University of Indianapolis, Maryville University, McKendree University and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

From its inception as a sport on campus in 1965 through 1986, Truman wrestling was a member of the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Bulldogs won five MIAA titles (1968, ’69, ’70, ’78, ’79) and had 33 individual conference champions. Wrestling returned as a conference sport in 2012 to the MIAA and remained as an associate member for one year while the school transitioned the majority of the athletics programs to the GLVC in 2013.

The 2016-17 schedule will be announced at a later date, however GLVC competition is expected to take place over a three-week period in January and February. The GLVC champion shall be decided upon by winning percentage of league matches only. There will not be a postseason tournament.
