  • Truman Delegation to Discuss WWI Posters

    worldwaroneposter.jpg

A trio from the University will participate in the Secretary of State’s Thursday Evening Speaker Series in Jefferson City.

Amanda Langendoerfer, associate dean of libraries for special collections and museums, along with Jason McDonald, assistant professor of history, and Heidi Cook, University Art Gallery director will present “Join, Save, Buy: U.S. World War I Posters on the Home Front.”

Upon entering World War I in 1917, the U.S. government and its civilian agencies produced roughly 3,000 different wartime posters. These artistic renderings depicted the ideals of patriotism, beauty, adventure and protection, and strongly contributed to the successful mobilization of citizens.

The program will provide an opportunity to view samples from one of the U.S. government’s major historical marketing endeavors and to recognize the impact of the Great War on American citizens, both home and abroad.

The presentation will take place at 7 p.m. July 12 in the Interpretive Center of the James C. Kirkpatrick State Information Center. Located at 600 West Main Street in Jefferson City, The State Archives is the official repository for state documents of permanent historic value.

All programs at the archives are free and open to the public, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information on this and other programming at the archives, contact Tracy Wegman at 573.526.5296 or tracy.wegman@sos.mo.gov.

Three members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity are spending the summer helping people with disabilities.

John Cullen and Crosbie Jarrett are working as support crew for the Journey of Hope, a cross-country cycling event, while Patrick Lucitt is participating in Build America, a six-week team event that travels the nation promoting accessible recreation. Both programs are part of Pi Kappa Phi’s national philanthropy The Ability Experience, a not-for-profit dedicated to providing funding and volunteer labor to numerous establishments that assist people with physical and mental disabilities.

To participate in the adventures, Cullen and Jarrett were each responsible for raising $2,500. Lucitt raised $1,500 to serve as a project manager for Build America. Throughout the previous school year members of Pi Kappa Phi conducted events to help with financing.

Cullen is taking the TransAmerica route, which left from Seattle on June 6. It will pass through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia.

On the South route, Jarrett left Long Beach, Calif., June 14. He will pass through Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

For Build America, Lucitt will visit North Carolina, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri and Iowa.

Build America will reach its conclusion in Chicago on July 28, and Journey of Hope will culminate in Washington, D.C., Aug. 11.

  • Volunteers Needed for Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic

Kirksville will be the host of the Missouri Mission of Mercy (MOMOM), a large-scale dental clinic, Aug. 3-4.

The clinic provides free oral health care to patients of all ages who cannot otherwise afford or access care. MOMOM events across America have helped more than 238,000 patients and have provided nearly $155 million in free dental services since 2000. In Missouri, more than 6,100 dental and general volunteers have provided more than $5.6 million in free care to 9,735 patients.

Volunteers are critical to the success of these clinics because of the large numbers of patients seen. In particular, there is a need of volunteers to help with the clinic set up Aug. 2 and the clinic tear down Aug. 4. There is also a need for more volunteer interpreters that speak Spanish and French. Anyone interested in volunteering for the upcoming clinic can click here for more information.

The clinic will take place in Pershing Arena. More information about the clinic is available here. Specific patient-related questions can be found at modental.org/about-us/mda-foundation/missouri-mission-of-mercy/patient-faq.
