A Kirksville company has invested $15,000 in the Truman State University football program.

Preferred Family Healthcare made the gift recently for the purchase of video recording and editing equipment. The new technology will improve the videotaping process of games and practice sessions, and permit advanced analysis and breakdown of tape, resulting in better scouting and game preparation.

“We appreciate Preferred Family Healthcare’s interest and investment in Bulldog football,” said Jerry Wollmering, Truman’s director of athletics. “The new equipment and software will significantly upgrade our video recording technology.”

Michael Schwend, a 1983 graduate of Truman, is the company’s president and Chief Executive Officer. He is a member of the Truman State University Board of Governors.

Truman opens its 2006 football campaign, the third season under Coach Shannon Currier, on Thursday, Aug. 24 at Minnesota State-Mankato.

A scholarship to memorialize former football coach John Ware has been created at Truman State University.

The John Ware Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a football player who has the highest grade point average from the previous year, earned at least two letters and has an unwavering commitment to Bulldog football.

The scholarship fund has been opened with memorial gifts and a personal gift from Melissa Ware, formerly the sports information director at Truman. Melissa Ware has also provided a planned gift to benefit the scholarship fund and football program through her recent enrollment in the Joseph Baldwin Society, a gift society that recognizes alumni and friends who have confirmed an estate gift.

A campaign to seek additional gifts is being headed by Truman’s Office of Advancement and the Athletic Department. The fund will become endowed when the permanent assets reach $10,000, the minimum amount necessary to endow the scholarship.

John Ware passed away on September 27, 2005 at the age of 46. Coach Ware served 19 seasons (1985-2003) on the football coaching staff at Truman, including nine seasons as head coach before moving on to lead the football program at Missouri Southern. Coach Ware ranks as the third on the Truman victory chart with 54 wins as a head coach and compiled winning seasons in seven of nine years.

Shifts are from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and last for three hours each.

Truman’s Staff Council Spirit Committee is selling Truman Spirit wristbands for $1 each.

The purple and white wristbands can be purchased from Kimberly Titus in the Registrar’s Office, McClain Hall 104, or from Katie Best in the Public Relations Office, McClain Hall 101.

Proceeds will go toward future Truman related spirit functions.

Jazzman’s and Freshens have relocated to the main concourse of the Student Union in preparation for the upcoming renovation.

Monica Barron, professor of English, recently participated in a panel titled, “Interdisciplinary Aspects of Ecofeminism” at the conference of the National Women’s Studies Association in Oakland, Calif.

Fontaine Piper, division head emeritus of human potential and performance and professor emeritus of exercise science; Alex Koch, associate professor of exercise science; Jerry Mayhew, professor of exercise science; and Abbie Smith, a spring 2006 graduate from Urbandale, Iowa; recently attended the 2006 American College of Sports Medicine meeting in Denver, Colo. They combined to present six research posters on various aspects of sports performance.
