A group of Truman accounting students have joined together to leave their mark on the University by creating the Class of 2011 Accounting Scholarship.

Beginning with the Fall 2013 semester, one masters of accountancy student, selected by department faculty, will receive $1,000 for the academic year.

The idea for a class accounting scholarship originated in April with Puskar Dahal, a master of accountancy student, who was inspired by the help he received as an undergraduate.

“I received the Delta Sigma Pi/Tina Schmidt scholarship,” Dahal said. “Not only was I happy for getting the money, but I felt like my hard work was recognized. I was told that what I was doing was right and I should continue doing it.”

Within 24 hours, 14 fellow students pledged to support the scholarship and as of July, 25 students have agreed to donate $200 each to launch the Class of 2011 Accounting Scholarship. Fundraising efforts will continue until the endowed scholarship fund is able to generate $1,000 per year from investment income. An annual scholarship will be awarded as the endowed fund is building.

To be eligible for the award, students must have a grade point average of at least 3.25, have been involved in extracurricular activities with at least one business organization as an undergraduate and have displayed leadership in at least one campus organization. Preference will be given to students who are not already receiving significant academic scholarships. Graduate teaching and research assistants are not eligible.

Student Affairs is looking for faculty and staff interested in volunteering to help families move their students on Move-In Day Aug. 20.

Volunteers would be helping unload cars and carrying items to the rooms. Student Affairs also works with volunteers from Greek organizations, campus ministries, athletics and other student organizations.

Student Affairs will host Dr. Lisa Caldwell, candidate for the Clinical Supervisor/Counselor position at University Counseling Services, for a series of on campus interviews Aug. 8. All are welcome to attend Caldwell’s presentation with an open forum immediately following. The presentation/forum will begin at 2 p.m. in Student Union Room 3203. The University Board of Governors will meet at 1 p.m. Aug. 6 in the Student Union Building Georgian Room B.

Beginning Aug. 1, the main campus chilled water loop, which provides air conditioning to several buildings, will be shut down for required maintenance. If everything goes as planned, the shutdown will end Aug. 4. If problems develop, the shutdown could last until Aug. 12. This will impact the air conditioning in the following buildings: Baldwin Hall, McClain Hall, Pickler Memorial Library, the Student Union Building, Violette Hall, the McKinney Center, and the north end of Magruder Hall in and around the planetarium. The impact will be different from building-to-building and are described below:

Baldwin Hall, the McKinney Center, and the north end of Magruder Hall: There will be no air conditioning at all. These buildings will be uncomfortably hot.

McClain Hall: There will be air conditioning, but it may be impaired somewhat. It is expected that the building temperature should be similar to recent days. The Data Center will not be affected.

Student Union Building: It is expected that the air conditioning will be at or near normal, however, the system will be operating in a new configuration for the first time.

Pickler Memorial Library and Violette Hall: The air conditioning in these buildings should be at or near normal.

This will be the first time this chilled water loop has been completely shut down for maintenance since the 1960s. The Physical Plant will be operating valves and configuring the buildings’ cooling systems in ways that have never been done before and unexpected things can happen. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Strategic Name Development is offering a $2,500 scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students majoring in linguistics, English, marketing or mass communications with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications are available at namedevelopment.com/scholarship. Application deadline is Aug. 15.

AES Engineers is providing $500 scholarships to high school seniors or college students, regardless of courses being studied, who meet certain criteria. Scholarships are intended for future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. Students must submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words in answer to one of the questions posted at aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm. Deadline for entry is Oct. 7.
