Valentine’s Day Service Project

The Multicultural Affairs Center and the Women’s Resource Center will support the Victim Support Services Kirksville Domestic Violence Shelter for Women by collecting needed hygiene and hair products.  
 
“Everybody Wants to be a Nigga, but No One Wants to be a Nigger: The Mis-Education of Nigger”

This workshop has been designed to bring historical understanding to the most pejorative, exploited, offensive, socially accepted and capitalist word in the English Dictionary - this word being “nigger.” Hines will provide the audience with a historical understanding of the evolution of the word, present-day critique of its usage in the public school system, college campuses and society, as well as its global popularity and the future of the word. Participants should be prepared to hear extremely sensitive language in an effort to find resolution to the issue. This event is sponsored by the Multicultural Affairs Center and the Association of Black Collegians.

Documentary: “The Interrupters”

“The Interrupters” presents unforgettable profiles in courage, as three former street criminals in Chicago place themselves in the line of fire to protect their communities. The two-hour film follows the lives of these “violence interrupters,” who include the charismatic daughter of one of the city’s most notorious former gang leaders, the son of a murdered father and a man haunted by a killing he committed as a teenager. As they intervene in disputes to prevent violence, they reveal their own inspired journeys of struggle and redemption.

This workshop examines the historical impact of slavery and post-slavery America in the exclusion of black/white bi-racial individuals. Discussions about space for mixed-race individuals and the value of self-identification will follow the presentation.

Jesse Owens’ quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. This event is sponsored by the Multicultural Affairs Center.
