Pickler Memorial Library will host three simultaneous exhibits marking the beginning of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Birthday Celebration at Truman. The exhibits are located in the first floor gallery of the library. A program about Lincoln and the exhibits is scheduled at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 in the gallery and will feature brief presentations by Mark Hanley, professor of history, and Gary Rozanc, assistant professor of art. University Counseling Services, HLTH 440 and the Student Public Health Association will be promoting Sleep Awareness Week 2008 from Oct. 13-17. Play with sheep on the Quad Oct. 14, wear pajamas to class Oct. 15 and relax in a hammock on the Quad Oct. 16. Tables will be set up from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. all week on the Quad or in the Student Union Building. For additional information, check out http://sleep.truman.edu.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to fund Incentive Scholarships of up to $500 for students who are not math or computer science majors to take extra math or computer science classes. To find out more, or to fill out an online application, go to http://smacs.truman.edu. Application deadline for spring 2009 semester classes is Oct. 14.
The Career Center will be hosting Expo 411 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 15 on the Mall. Expo 411 is designed to help students prepare for this fall’s Career Expo. Students can sign up for the Expo and S.C.O.R.E. and employer mock interviews, have their resume critiqued, and find out how to successfully work a career fair. Free food and lots of helpful information will be provided. All students and professors are welcome to come.
The School of Business will be hosting an open house from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Violette Hall upstairs commons. The open house is for all students who are interested in learning more about a major in accounting or business administration, or a minor in business. Refreshments will be available. The Multicultural Affairs Center will host a presentation by the students of a Mexican history class taught by Marc Becker, associate professor of history, at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Baldwin Little Theater. They will present a multi-media examination on the diversity of Mexico, along with its varied historical and cultural traditions.
The General Honors committee and the Office of the Provost invites interested, prospective and current General Honors students and faculty advisers to an information reception at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Alumni Room of the Student Union Building. This will be an opportunity to learn more about one of Truman’s top academic awards. General Honors in Arts and Science is awarded to graduating students who complete five approved courses including at least one from each of the four areas of humanities, social science, mathematics, and natural science with a GPA of at least 3.5 in these five courses and an overall GPA of at least 3.5. Students may pick up applications for the 2008-2009 “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges Award” in the Dean of Student Affairs Office, Student Union Building 3100. To qualify, students should be active in campus and community activities, have a 2.75 cumulative GPA and be a senior eligible for graduation in December, May or August of the 2008-2009 academic year. Alpha Phi Omega is sponsoring Little Event beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 19. Little Event is a service event where members of Alpha Phi Omega will help with odd jobs needed throughout the community, such as cleaning, raking leaves and cleaning gutters. This year the Little Event has been expanded to provide needed services to students and campus organizations.
