Vol. 16, No. 23 - Feb. 28, 2012

Features

  • Summer Grants to be Awarded to Bring Traditional Courses Online

The Truman Institute is offering a second round of summer incentive grant opportunities specifically targeted at redesigning courses for online delivery.

These grants are designed to move toward the goal of having each major offering at least one online course, where feasible, within the next couple of summer sessions.

Grant applications are due by March 26. Application forms can be found at institute.truman.edu/forms.asp. The first two links on the page contain the application form and the RFP for the grant.

Several grants were awarded in the first round, but up to 10 awards are still available.

It is highly important to grow Truman’s summer offerings in ways that help keep students taking courses at Truman. Students will increasingly take their summer courses elsewhere if Truman does not rise to meet the demand for flexibility that online courses provide. Moreover, offering content to students during the summer keeps them engaged in the curriculum.

While teaching students in the traditional classroom should, and will continue to be, Truman’s mission, offering some online content in targeted areas during the summer term, helps support the health of the institution and its students.

Faculty with questions about this process may contact Kevin Minch at 785.5384 or kminch@truman.edu.

  • Early-Vreeland Lecture Looks at Harry Truman's Decision to Order The Use of Atomic Bombs on Japan

The Truman Department of History will host the Rev. Wilson Miscamble, CSC from Notre Dame University, at 7:30 p.m. March 15 in the Student Union Building Activities Room. Miscamble will deliver the 2012 Barbara Early-Vreeland Lecture.

Miscamble, professor of history at the University of Notre Dame, will speak on his recently published book “The Most Controversial Decision: Truman, the Atomic Bombs, and the Defeat of Japan.”

At Notre Dame, Miscamble teaches U.S. diplomatic and political history. His research focus is post-World War II U.S. foreign policy. The author of numerous books, two of his titles have received the Harry S. Truman Book Award: “George F. Kennan and the Making of American Foreign Policy, 1947-1950” and “From Roosevelt to Truman: Potsdam, Hiroshima, and the Cold War.”

A native of Australia, Miscamble earned both a B.A. and an M.A. from the University of Queensland. He then earned three degrees at Notre Dame: a Master of Divinity, an M.A. in history and his Ph.D. in history. He was ordained as a priest in 1988.

The Barbara Early-Vreeland Lecture, established by Joseph Vreeland in memory of his wife who graduated from Truman in 1973, gives the Truman community the opportunity to hear public lectures by scholars of international reputation.

  • Truman SIFE Team Wins at Regional Competition

Truman’s SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team was recently named the third place winner at the ConocoPhillips Ethics Case Competition in Manhattan, Kan., Feb. 2-4. The event was developed and hosted by Kansas State University’s SIFE Team.

“The competition was an extremely rewarding experience. It allowed Truman State SIFE to compete against much larger, Division I schools and show just how successful we are. We are very proud to have placed third at this competition and cannot wait to return next year to improve upon this success,” Cody Hagan, Truman SIFE president, said.

Along with a third place plaque, the team also received a check for $1,000. The Truman SIFE team plans to put this money right back into the projects that they are planning. Every year the team organizes and puts on numerous projects that benefit the University, local community and surrounding area.

In this competition, participating students had 36 hours to utilize their business skills for analyzing, researching and developing a solution to a case about an ethical dilemma. After developing a solution, they created a professional presentation, which included a verbal script, visual slides and a written executive summary. Business leaders and university faculty served as judges for the event and evaluated the presentations.
