To celebrate the successful conclusion of the “Bright Minds Bright Futures” campaign, the University will host a Dessert Reception at 7 p.m. July 7 on the south end of the Quadrangle.
 
“Bright Minds Bright Futures” is Truman’s first-ever comprehensive campaign. It began in July 2006 with the goal of raising $30 million in five years. The campaign, which will officially conclude June 30 of this year, has already exceeded that goal with more than $30.5 million in cash, multi-year pledges and new planned gift commitments recorded. Major initiatives of the campaign included student scholarships, student enrichment and academic programs, faculty support, athletics and mission enhancement.

Sarrah El Moumouhi, a senior Middle Eastern studies major and political science minor, has been accepted for a two-month summer internship at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, in the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) of the Office of the Under-Secretary-General.


El Moumouhi originally learned about this opportunity from an on-campus presentation in October 2010 by Igor Shpiniov from the DGACM at the United Nations. Shpiniov encouraged her to apply for the highly selective summer language internship, which led to an interview with the DGACM. Her internship will take place from July 5 to Aug. 31.

“Primarily, as an intern, I will be assigned to the Training and Outreach Coordination Team, which is part of the Office of the Under-Secretary-General, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, New York,” El Moumouhi said. “Main assignments include providing administrative support for training and outreach, translating portions of the Language Outreach Portal from English into Arabic and/or French, and attending meetings and conferences at the United Nations.”

As a student at Truman, El Moumouhi teaches Arabic in the Department of Classical & Modern Languages and works as a peer advisor and mock interviewer in the Career Center. She will graduate in December.

The Kansas City Royals selected Truman pitcher Christian Witt in the 36th round of Major League Baseball’s draft June 8.

Witt becomes the first Truman player drafted since the San Diego Padres took outfielder Tony Vandemore in the 25th round in 1999.

A native of Holt, Mo., and graduate of Kearney High School, Witt was an honorable mention all-MIAA pick following a season in which he posted a 2.70 ERA in 36 innings pitched. The hard throwing right hander’s first nine appearances were from the bullpen as he allowed just five earned runs in that span before becoming a mainstay in the starting rotation in mid April. Witt earned two MIAA Pitcher of the Week awards and finished the 2011 season with a 4-2 record and 43 strikeouts to just 10 walks.

“Having Christian be selected by a major league team is a dream for any ball player but to have his hometown team take a chance on him is really special,” said Dan Davis, head baseball coach. “Christian worked really hard for us as a Bulldog and I know he will take that strong work ethic to wherever the Royals assign him in their system. This is a great day for Truman Baseball and especially Christian and his family.”

The last Bulldog pitcher taken in MLB’s draft was Al Nipper in 1980.

Middle school students interested in exploring health care careers will have the opportunity for hands-on interaction during the Adair County M*A*S*H Camp taking place July 12-13 on the Truman campus and at Northeast Regional Medical Center.

Activities include: seeing the inside of a hospital radiology department, learning to “scrub in” or “sew up a wound,” climbing in the chopper with emergency medical personnel, learning how to take blood pressure and dissecting organs to find out how they work.

The first 30 completed registrations will receive a spot in the camp. The next five completed registrations will be placed on the waiting list.

The $40 registration fee includes meals, activities and a t-shirt. A limited number of scholarships are available to families for whom the registration fee is a considerable hardship.

In May, Truman students Rudolf Cesaretti, Racheal Kissee and Brandon Wehmeyer, attended and competed at the international Road to Innovative Social Entrepreneurship - Pakistan conference at the University of Chicago.

Teams from around the world attended the conference in the hopes of having their proposal implemented through the Human Development Foundation with a $10,000 grant. At the conference teams presented their social entrepreneurship venture to determine which team’s project would be implemented, and also competed in challenges such as marketing and consulting, which counted towards a separate cash prize.

The Truman students’ proposal of establishing a book bank/library in the Hunza Valley in Pakistan placed 5th in the venture challenge and overall the team placed 6th at the conference.

“We may not have won, but we made new friends from all over the world and made contacts who are going to put us in contact with other organizations in Pakistan who may be able to help us implement our proposal even without the grant,” Kissee said. “One way or the other, we want to see this project take off; it may just take longer to raise the funds now.”

The School of Business and the School of Social and Cultural Studies at Truman supported the students’ efforts.

President Paino will host his final All-University Meeting for Fiscal Year 2011 at 10 a.m. June 29 in Violette Hall 1000. President Paino will provide an update on state appropriations and the approved Fiscal Year 2012 budget and salary policies. A webcast of the meeting will be available shortly after the meeting ends.

Virtual Servers
ITS has been working hard to help reduce university expenses. They have moved many servers to virtual servers which are much more efficient to operate. The virtual servers provide approximately a 90 percent savings in the electrical power consumed.

The Taiwan at Truman program is in need of host families for a one-weekend homestay with local families during the weekend of July 1-3. Twenty high school girls from Taiwan are participating in a five-week study abroad program here at Truman. The program is recruiting families to take one or two of these students into their home for a weekend and share with them our American culture.
