Folk Arts Exhibit

The Kirksville Arts Association is cooperating with the Missouri Folklore Society and 32 Missouri art collectors/artists to create a November-long exhibit titled “Celebrating Missouri’s Diverse Folk.” The exhibit features arts from African and Latino immigrants, along with works from more established European-heritage cultures, plus the Missouri Humanities Council’s Sac and Fox Indian exhibit. From hand-stamped Adinkra to hand-made zither, the exhibit foregrounds arts which all cultures practice as they feed, clothe and entertain themselves. A 1930s oil painting depicts sorghum-making; a Congolese sawdust painting shows villagers pounding yams. A papier-mache mask from Puerto Rico contrasts one carved of ebony in Senegal. Wood carvings range from small masks to adult-sized rocking horses. Digitized 19th century photographs share exhibit space with an enormous new digital painting. Support for the exhibit comes from Truman State University, the Missouri Humanities Council and the Missouri Arts Council.
