Art Gallery to Feature Ceramic Sculpture Exhibition
An opening reception for the ceramic art display, “Out of Place,” will take place from 5-6 p.m. Oct. 26 in the University Art Gallery.
“Out of Place” features the work of Marshall Maude and Sarah Gross, two ceramic artists whose practices explore different approaches to material, form and sculpture.
Maude is a ceramic artist and educator who divides his time between Lawrence, Kansas, and Camp Verde, Arizona. He is a professor in the Department of Visual Art at the University of Kansas. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in China, Denmark, Korea, Mexico and New Zealand. Maude has participated in artist residencies around the world and founded the University of Kansas Interdisciplinary Ceramic Research Center.
Gross creates ceramic sculpture and installations that explore architectural ornamentation, longing and subverted expectations. She is an associate professor of visual art at the University of Kansas and holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Carleton College. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and her pieces are included in collections such as the U.S. Department of State, the University of Costa Rica and the Shiwan Ceramics Museum in Foshan, China.
Maude will host a gallery talk at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 26, and Gross will host her gallery talk at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 10. Both talks will take place in the University Art Gallery. Their collection will remain on display from Oct. 26-Nov. 20. These events are free and open to the public.
