Visiting Speaker to Discuss Historic Impact of Dutch Portraiture
Visiting speaker Dr. Saskia Beranek will give a talk on “Women, Power and Portraits in the Dutch Republic” from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in Ophelia Parrish 2210.
Beranek is an associate professor of art history at Illinois State University. Her talk will highlight material from her new book, “The Cultural Work of the Early Modern Dutch Portrait: Amalia Von Solms and the Shape of the Self in European Art,” which uses portraits of Mary Princess of Orange to explore how portraits have actively participated in domestic, national and international politics, as well as connected people across time and space.
