Henrikson, Mathis Led Record-Setting Event for Bulldogs

Addie Mathis’ school mark in the mile lasted less than two months before Lexy Henrikson grabbed it away at the Washburn Open, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
Henrikson and Mathis finished fifth and seventh, respectively, with Henrikson’s 4:55.96 mark breaking the record of 4:57.84 set by Mathis at Iowa, Dec. 14. Mathis’ 4:56.57, a would-be new record itself if not for Henrikson, joined an entire squad of Bulldogs who each set new personal bests in nine individual events at Washburn.
Head coach Collin Nurenberg remarked on how unique it was to have a day result in team-wide personal bests and the miles run by Henrikson and Mathis.
“It takes a lot of things to go right for these types of results to happen, the long streak of consistent and high-level training is what led to this,” Nurenberg said. “I am excited for them, but I can’t say I am too surprised since I get to see what they do at practice every day. What I am most proud of is the effort they gave and the level heads they kept during a very packed and hectic race.”
The senior runners currently sit 44th and 48th in the Division II mile after weekend events. Nurenberg said the immediate future involves preparing for the Grand Valley State GV Big Meet, Feb. 14-15, in Allendale, Michigan, and determining the best strategy to move up national lists.
Other Bulldog distance runners setting personal bests at Washburn include: Raina Baker, 600 yards, 1:27.66; Phoebe Canatsey, 800 meters, 2:18.58; Lydia Lehmbeck, mile, 5:15.23; Kati Schoeneberg, 3000 meters, 10:38.72; Evan AuBuchon, mile, 4:16.03; Gavin Hill, 3000 meters, 8:39.01; and Jake Gutzman, 3000 meters, 8:50.78. Full meet results are available here. The Northwest Missouri State Bearcat Invite is up next for Truman track and field, Feb. 7-8 in Maryville.
