Faculty wishing to apply for sabbaticals during the academic year 2008-2009 should submit a letter of intent to their current dean by May 4. Details are available at http://vpaa.truman.edu/sabbaticals/index.stm. The sabbatical applications themselves are due Sept. 7.

Join the Pickler Memorial Library staff in celebrating the 400th anniversary of our country by visiting the display in the gallery. Settled in 1607, Jamestown is our nation’s birthplace, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.

A short-term modified supplemental retirement plan has been approved for qualifying retirements between July 1, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2009. The application window for the plan ends May 15. Applications will be submitted to the June 2007 Board for approval. Please review the two options provided in the plan before submitting your application. The Student Recreation Center will be hosting a Summer Sports Camp for children ages 7-9 July 9-13 and ages 9-11 July 23-27. The camp will give children the opportunity to have fun, learn and participate in activities that will keep them physically fit. Cost of the camp is $75 per child and $50 for each additional immediate family member. The deadline for enrollment is May 31. The Society for Sino-American Studies is hosting Cranes on the Quadrangle from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. April 17-19 on the Quadrangle in front of Pickler Memorial Library. There will be a bake sale fund-raiser for Operation Smile, a worldwide nonprofit organization that repairs facial deformities of children of low socio-economic status. Delta Sigma Theta is sponsoring the Sue Shear Dress Suit Drive from noon-3 p.m. April 17-20 in the Student Union Building. Delta Sigma Theta, the Society of the Prim Roses and the Women’s Resource Center will be collecting old and new business apparel. All donations will be taken to the local Salvation Army. The Commission on Undergraduate Curriculum invites faculty, staff and students to attend the remaining Open Forum titled “Beyond JINS: Interdisciplinarity in the New Curriculum.” The session will be from 3-4:30 p.m. April 17 in Magruder Hall 1096.

The 33rd Annual Service Recognition Banquet will take place at 6:30 p.m. April 17 in the Student Union Building Lounge. Approximately 149 current and retired members of the University will be honored for their commitment to the University. Tickets are available in the Human Resources office in McClain Hall 106 for $10 each.

The Muslim Students Association presents “Islam After 9/11: The Moderate Majority Speaks” from 6-7 p.m. April 17 in the West Campus Suites Multipurpose Room. Colleges Against Cancer presents Glow Stick it to Cancer,
a two-mile run in the dark, from 9-11 p.m. April 18 at Stokes Stadium. Cost is $4 or $15 with a T-shirt. Registration begins at 9 p.m. at the gate, where participants can get their T-shirt and/or glow stick. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Students Together Educating Peers hosts the True Man of Strength Awards at 6:30 p.m. April 18 in the Student Union Building Conference Room. The five nominated finalists will read their essays and the winner will be announced. The event is part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. There will be a Better World Books recruitment meeting
from 8:30-10 p.m. April 19 in Baldwin Hall 249. Better World Books is an organization that has a book drive at the end of each semester for those in impoverished areas of the world, such as Africa. Showgirls dance team tryouts are here. Clinics will be from 7-9 p.m. April 19 and 20 in Pershing Arena. At the clinic, participants will learn the dance and fight song to be performed at the tryout.
