Alumna Honors Son with $100,000 Gift to the University to Support Scholarship
Louise Kriner is using a planned gift of $100,000 to honor the memory of her late son, Lawrence T. Kriner.
A 1967 graduate of Truman, Louise was a nurse until 1989 when she retired as the director of nursing at the Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville.
Lawrence was serving in the military when he was killed in a rappelling accident in 1993 at the age of 19. He was her only child.
The Louise (Schwaner) Kriner and PFC Lawrence T. Kriner Scholarship will go to assist nursing students from the Kirksville area that demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Preference will be given to students interested in the military.
This is not the first time Louise has made a public gesture in memory of her son. She also has a scholarship at Kirksville High School in his honor. It is awarded every year to a student entering the military.
Lawrence also has a bench in his honor, as do his grandparents, all gifts from Louise. Furthermore, she has planted a tree in Brashear Park for Lawrence and donated money to the library in his name because the two would often go there when he was a child.
Louise resides in Kirksville, and still visits regularly with members of the Truman community.
