Banner 9 - Updated Student, Financial, and Human Resource Services - A Progress Report

The Banner 9 upgrade project is a multiyear, campus-wide initiative to complete the upgrade of our Banner environment.

According to the vendor (Ellucian), “Banner 9 by Ellucian is no ordinary upgrade. It delivers a fresh user experience, all-new tools, and significantly improves capabilities across Banner, driving new efficiencies so you can focus on student success.”

This new release delivers a number of important enhancements, including a modern user interface, enhanced navigation and process management tools, and new functionality across the Student, Human Resources, and Finance functions. In addition, Banner 9 will run on any browser and on mobile devices.

At Truman, we use two primary interfaces to access Banner. One is the Administrative forms interface used for data processing and maintenance, reporting, etc. The other interface is the one most broadly used by campus and it is the self service system accessed via links in TruView. Both the Administrative interface and the Self Service TruView services will be upgraded by the completion of this project.

For the last year and half, work has been underway building out the new infrastructure to support the Banner 9 environment. Much of the underlying support systems and functionality have been completed.  In May of 2016, final grades were completed by a small pilot group using the new Banner 9 Faculty Grade Entry application for the submission of final grades. This pilot went well and the new grade entry application was made available to all faculty for final grading in Summer 2016. Faculty Grade Entry lets our faculty enter grades from any device, provides an upgraded user interface including graphical grading status and the ability to upload a spreadsheet of grades.

Current efforts are focused on completing the remaining upgrades (scheduled to be completed in March 2018) -- and we currently have a team working on a pilot of the new Registration application.

We plan to pilot the new Registration system in October 2017 if all goes as planned.  The new Registration application has many new features that we believe will greatly improve the registration experience for our students. The new features include:

  • Calendar view of schedule
  • Conditional drop/add (swap)
  • All errors checked and listed at one time
  • PDF schedule print/calendar ics file
  • Email schedule
  • Available seats/waitlist openings in one view
