Women's Swim Team Wins Conference Title

Feb. 19, 2005 - Truman women's swimming captured the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championship on Saturday, while the men’s team finished third at the event hosted by Delta State in Cleveland, Miss.

The women’s team scored 1055 points at the meet, easily finishing ahead of second-place Delta State by over 350 points. The men’s team collected 620 points in the three-day meet. Henderson State won the men’s title with 799.5 points, followed by the host school with 759.5 points.

In their first seasons as a member of the conference, both Bulldog squads had successful meets. On the women's side, Diana Betsworth was named the Swimmer of the Meet and head coach Colleen Murphy was named the conference Coach of the Year.

The women qualified five more athletes for the NCAA meet. Twenty members of the team have now reached qualifying marks, meaning Truman will once again have the maximum 18 athletes at the national competition in March.

Three men’s member also earned a trip to nationals at the conference meet, bringing the number of men’s qualifiers up to nine.

Truman’s women dominated the relay events, winning all five, including setting four pool records in the process.

Individual winners included Diana Betsworth in the 100, 200 and 500 free, Emily Pufall in the 50 free and Michaela Osborne in the 100 breast and 200 breast.

The newest national qualifiers on the women’s side are Sue Ellen Thoma, Emily Chadwick, Brigit Brunsman, Katie Welsh and Amy Gregor.

On the men’s side, six school records fell over the course of the event. Josh Otis set a new standard in the 200 IM. He captured a conference title in that event. Other conference champion and record setters included Tim Scheuber in the 100 free and the 200 free relay team.

Robert Fletcher made his mark in the school’s record books by breaking both the 100 back and 200 back records. The men’s 200 medley relay team was the final men’s record setting team.

The newest qualifiers on the men’s side are Nick Joslin, Alex Totura and Adam Pruess.

Both teams will be off now until Mar. 9-12 when they compete at the NCAA Championships in Orlando, Fla. Truman’s women will be looking to tie a NCAA record at that meet by winning its fifth-straight NCAA title.
